Helena Blomqvist (b. 1975) is a Swedish artist whose photographic narratives centre on vulnerable and overlooked figures. Drawing on dreams, fairy tales, historical photographs, and contemporary events, she explores loneliness, belonging, and humanity’s relationship with the natural world.
Her imagined worlds give children, elderly women, and animals leading roles. Against a backdrop of uncertainty and loss, animals become companions, witnesses, and mourners. Tenderness and dark humour temper the melancholy, bringing questions of war, environmental destruction, and exclusion into intimate stories about care and survival.
Blomqvist builds the models, sets, and props that give these narratives physical form, sometimes spending months on a single model. She then photographs and digitally edits the scenes, creating a separate reality in which the familiar and the impossible coexist.
