Cathleen Naundorf (b. 1968) is a German-born photographer whose work brings together haute couture, portraiture, and elaborate photographic staging.
Working primarily with large-format cameras and Polaroid film, Naundorf approaches each photograph as a carefully constructed scene. Clothing, location, lighting, and set design are developed together, while the irregularities of the photographic process become part of the finished work. Her images draw on her background in painting and her interest in the atmosphere and composition of historical portraiture.
Her long-running exploration of haute couture includes work with fashion houses such as Chanel, Dior, and Valentino. Rather than documenting seasonal collections, she treats the garments as elements within a broader photographic narrative, exploring imagination, craftsmanship, and the passage of time.
